This is one of the main processes within a warehouse and consists of people referred to as order pickers, taking and collecting articles in a certain quantity previous to shipment in order to accomplish customer orders. Order picking is an easy warehousing method. The efficiency in which this job is done can be directly connected to the productivity of a supply chain. Therefore, order picking is one of the most controlled logistic processes. Order picking falls within the category of the warehouse management system.
There are specific types of order picking which comprise: pick to box method, wave picking method, piece picking or picker to part method, sorting systems method and zone picking method.
The pick to box method comprises the order picker filling the box with the stuff from his or her station. The box then moves to the other picking stations until the customer order is complete. In this technique, there is no movement of the order picker staff. In the wave picking method, the order pickers move around in order to collect the required items for several orders. The picker to part method or piece picking is similar where the order pickers or picker move to gather the items required but for one order only.
There is no movement by the order picker in the sorting systems method. Rather, products are delivered to the orderpicker by an automatic system like for instance an automatic storage system or a conveyor system. In the zone picking method, every order picker is assigned to one particular zone. They are responsible for just realizing order picking within this specified area.
